Privacy policy
This policy covers the packbook iOS app and the packbook.co web service (together, “packbook”, “we”). The short version: your gear library lives on your device, we run no ads, we use product analytics only to improve packbook, and we never sell your personal information.
Data in the iOS app
Your gear library (items, photos, stickers, packs, kits, and packing lists) is stored locally on your device and works fully without an account. If you choose to sign in (Sign in with Apple or Google), we receive your email address to authenticate you, and your library is backed up to our servers (hosted on Supabase) so publishing and identification can run under your account. Deleting the app deletes the local copy; Settings › Delete account removes the server copy and the account itself, at any time and without asking us (see “Your rights”).
Camera access is used only to photograph your gear and turn it into stickers. Photos stay on your device except as described below.
AI gear identification. When you scan an item (or re-identify one you renamed), the photo of that item (background removed) is uploaded to our storage and shared with our service providers to identify it: a search provider (Scrapingdog, querying Google Lens for reverse-image matches and Google Shopping for product names, prices, and buy links) and an AI provider (Anthropic’s Claude) that picks the best product match. Text you provide (item names, trip names) may also be sent to these providers — for example to look up a renamed item or to run the pre-trip Ready Check. A per-install device identifier accompanies these requests for rate limiting. This data is used to return results to you; we do not use it to build advertising profiles. Each provider handles data under its own policy: Anthropic · Scrapingdog.
Product analytics. We use Mixpanel to understand which features are used (for example, “an item was scanned” or “a pack was published”) so we can improve packbook. These events describe feature usage — they do not include your photos or the contents of your gear library, and they are never used for advertising or shared for ad targeting.
Data on the web service
Account. Signing in at packbook.co (Sign in with Apple, Google sign-in, or an email magic link) gives us your email address, used solely to authenticate you and manage the packs you publish. Authentication and the database are provided by Supabase.
Published packs are public. When you publish a trip or kit, that page (packbook.co/t/…) is visible to anyone with the link and may appear in the public explore gallery. It contains whatever you chose to publish: gear names, images, weights, notes. You can unpublish or delete a share at any time from your shares page.
Cookies. We use session cookies for sign-in only. No advertising or tracking cookies.
Hosting. The site runs on Vercel, which keeps standard server logs (including IP addresses) for security and operations.
What we don't do
No ads. No tracking across other companies’ apps or websites. Our product analytics (Mixpanel, above) measure how packbook itself is used — nothing follows you elsewhere. We do not sell or share your personal information for advertising, and we have not done so in the preceding 12 months.
Your rights (including CCPA/CPRA)
If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information we hold about you, to correct it, to request deletion, to opt out of sale or sharing (we do neither), and to not be discriminated against for exercising these rights. We extend the same rights to everyone.
To delete your account: in the iOS app, open Settings from your profile and tap Delete account. It runs immediately and takes everything with it: your backed-up gear and its images, your published pages, your profile, and the account itself. It cannot be undone. The gear stored on your phone stays there, and deleting the app removes that local copy.
To delete individual things: remove a published page from your shares page at any time. If you would rather we did any of this for you, or you no longer have the app installed, email support@packbook.co and we will handle it within 45 days.
Children
packbook is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes
If this policy changes, we’ll update this page and the effective date above. Material changes to how we handle your data will be called out in the app or on the site.
